Privacy policy
In short
- Day is used by schools. Each school decides what Day is used for and is responsible for the information about its children and staff. We look after that information for the school.
- Day keeps what it needs to show children their school day and to show teachers how their classes are getting on, and nothing more.
- Day never keeps a score against a child's name, never sells or shares information for advertising, and has no tracking or analytics.
- When someone signs in with Google, Day uses only their email address to find who they are. When a teacher brings in slides from Google Drive, Day sees only the files they pick.
Who we are, and who is responsible
Day is made by Wasil Educational Technologies ("Wasil", "we"), Mudon, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Day is part of the Wasil Suite.
In Day, the school is responsible. A school chooses to use Day and decides how it is used. In data protection terms the school is the controller and Wasil is its processor: we use children's and staff information only to provide Day to that school, under our agreement with the school. Questions about a child's information are best sent to the child's school first.
On this website, we are responsible. For the details someone gives us when they join the beta, Wasil is the controller.
This website (wasilday.com)
This website sets no cookies, has no analytics or tracking, and loads nothing from other companies. Our hosting provider records basic technical logs, such as the time of a request, to keep the site running.
If you join the beta, we keep your name, work email, school, role, the number of pupils if you give it, and anything you choose to tell us. We use these only to contact you about the Day beta. We do not share them or add you to a mailing list. We delete them when the beta ends, or sooner if you ask.
What Day keeps about children
Children's details come from Wasil Hub, the school's record of who is in each class. Day keeps a copy of what it needs:
- Who they are: first and last name, preferred name, class and year group, and whether they are on roll.
- Their settings: such as read aloud and bigger words, and the version of Day they see. A teacher may set a version for a child, with a one-word reason (SEND or EAL). That reason is the only special category information Day holds.
- Their work: what they opened and finished in each lesson, their quiz and practice answers, the cards in their practice boxes, their homework ticks and their practice plan.
- Asking for help: when a child asks for help, the lesson or homework, a reason and a short note of up to 200 letters, with the teacher's reply.
- Signing in: how they may sign in, and a record of each time they did. Badges, pictures and class codes are kept by Wasil Hub, not by Day.
What Day does not keep: no score for a child, no ranking and no streaks; no photos or uploads from children; no child's password for any other website; nothing from MeQ (the How I am feeling button is only a link); no location, device identifiers, tracking or analytics. What a child says about a flashcard is never shown to staff or families.
Who can see it: the child; the teachers and teaching assistants of their class; school admins; families, through Wasil Connect, for their own child's homework; and, for help requests, only the child, the teacher it went to and the school's safeguarding lead. Wasil staff see it only when they need to keep Day running.
What Day keeps about staff
Staff details come from Wasil Hub: name, school email, role and the classes they teach. Day also keeps what staff create, such as lessons, quizzes, uploaded files and voice notes, and a record of important actions, such as publishing a lesson or changing how children sign in.
Information from Google
Day uses Google in two places. In both, Day asks for the smallest permission Google offers.
Signing in with Google
Children whose school uses Google on Chromebooks can sign in with their school Google account. Day asks Google only for the account's email address (the "openid" and "email" permissions). Day uses that address once, to find the child in Wasil Hub, and keeps only the record that the child signed in with Google. If Hub cannot match the address, Day shows it to the school's admins for 14 days so they can correct the record in Hub. Day does not keep Google passwords or Google access tokens.
Google Drive and Google Slides
Teachers can bring Google Slides into a lesson. They choose the files in Google's own file picker, and Day can see only those files (the "drive.file" permission). Day uses the short-lived access Google gives for that one request to copy each chosen presentation into the lesson, then discards it: Day never stores or logs it. Day keeps each chosen file's Drive id, name and the time it last changed, so a teacher can bring in a newer version later. Day cannot see any other files in the teacher's Drive. Nothing about children is sent to Google.
How we treat it
Day's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use Google information only to provide the features described here. We do not sell it, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models, and people at Wasil do not read it except where needed for security, to fix a problem the school has asked about, or where the law requires.
Who else is involved
- Railway: hosts Day, its database, and lesson files with the copies children see, in the United States (Railway's US West region). Information travels there encrypted.
- Sentry, once error reporting is turned on: receives reports of errors on Day's server. These contain no names, ids, cookies or request contents. Children's devices never contact Sentry.
- Wasil Hub, Wasil Active and Wasil Connect: other parts of the Wasil Suite the school uses, as described on our homepage.
- Google: only as described above.
We share information with no one else, except where the law requires it.
How long it is kept
- A child's work is kept through the following school year, then deleted.
- Everything about a child who has left the school, their name included, is deleted 12 months after Day learns they have left.
- Where a child is in a lesson right now is deleted at the end of the school day.
- Help requests are kept for a year, unless the teacher or safeguarding lead keeps one longer and records why.
- Lessons and teaching materials are kept for the school. A teacher's voice note follows the same rule as children's work.
Deleting removes the information from Day. It can stay in our hosting provider's backups until those backups expire.
Keeping it safe
Everything in Day is kept separate for each school. Staff sign in through Wasil Hub. Children's sessions end at the end of the school day, and shared iPads sign out after each session. Files are only ever shown to the people they were shared with. Information travels encrypted, and children's answers and published lessons cannot be changed afterwards.
Your rights
You can ask to see the information held about you or your child, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. For information in Day, ask your school, which can ask us to act on its behalf. For details you gave us when joining the beta, contact us directly. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top, and tell schools about any important change before it takes effect.
